If you have a few or all of your teeth missing, one solution is to have a denture. A denture is made from hard-wearing material that mimics the look of teeth and gums to give you mouth a natural appearance. Your denture will be made to fit snugly to your gums and you will be able to remove it for cleaning.

When you wear a denture for the first time it may take some getting used to when speaking, eating and chewing. It is important that you take extra care in your hygiene regime so you can avoid bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease. Our hygienist will be able to show you the best way to take care of your denture and gums and will tell you about specialised brushes you can use to do this.

About chrome dentures

Made from cast metal, chrome dentures are considered to be best suited as permanent partial dentures. This is because they are incredibly strong and do not irritate the mouth. Unlike the plastic partial dentures that are clipped onto natural teeth, chrome dentures actually rest on the teeth for a stronger and more comfortable hold.

Chrome dentures are far superior to plastic dentures because your bite will be stronger and you will have greater chewing forces when you eat, meaning you’ll experience healthier gums. With chrome dentures there is less material covering your mouth’s soft tissue, meaning you’ll be able to taste food better and enjoy what you eat.

For more information about chrome dentures, contact Dr Elizabeth Melvin Dentistry to arrange an appointment.

Regular dental check-ups form the first step to maintaining healthy teeth and preventing future dental problems from occurring.

A dental check up will help us to find out if you need any treatments to get your oral health in top condition.

Check-ups at Dr Elizabeth Melvin include:

  • Examination of teeth and gums
  • Discussion of your oral health requirements
  • X-rays (if necessary)
  • Estimate of treatment fees

We might need to carry out a more thorough examination if:

  • You have gum disease
  • You require orthodontic treatment
  • You’re interested in some of the cosmetic treatments we provide

To arrange a check up at Dr Elizabeth Melvin, contact the practice on 01 660 9021.

Dental hygiene treatment is delivered by our excellent hygienist, who will help to remove any plaque from your teeth that may have built up in certain areas. Your teeth will be professionally cleaned with special equipment and pastes. This process is also known as scaling and polishing. An important aspect of the hygienist’s role is to show you how to look after your teeth so they remain free from plaque. You will be advised on the best brushing technique and given tips on flossing and using interdental brushes.

Dental hygiene at Dr Elizabeth Melvin Dentistry also forms part of treating gum disease and bad breath. If you have a bridge, denture, orthodontic system or dental implant you will have specific hygiene needs that the hygienist will be able to assist you with.

It is recommend that you come in for regular hygiene appointments to ensure your mouth stays clean and healthy.

Are your teeth stained, chipped, or misaligned? Veneers are a good treatment option to consider because they look like natural teeth and don’t require a major procedure.

A veneer is a very thin, tooth-coloured piece of porcelain (like a false finger nail) that is bonded on top of your own tooth. Based on your needs, we can adjust the shape of your veneers to make your teeth look longer and/or closer together. You can have just one veneer or a whole set, depending on how many teeth need treatment.

For a single stained tooth we can also match the precise shade of porcelain to give it a lighter appearance and fit in with the surrounding teeth. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps when braces are not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others.

Contact our team at Dr Elizabeth Melvin Dentistry to find out how veneers can benefit you.

The thought of having a tooth extracted might make you feel a bit uneasy, but the caring and professional team here at Dr Elizabeth Melvin Dentistry are here to make sure your procedure is comfortable and stress-free from start to finish.

If you have advanced tooth decay or an impacted wisdom tooth, you may require oral surgery to have them safely extracted. Depending on your particular case and the severity of your problem, you will be given anaesthetic during the procedure.

It is always important to seek the advice of a dental professional if you are worried about any of your teeth. Never attempt to pull out your own tooth at home as this could cause a more serious problem for you. Dentists have the right equipment and sterile environment in which to perform this type of procedure with the utmost care and your recovery will be fairly quick. In the case of wisdom teeth extractions, you may have some swelling after the procedure and discomfort that can be eased with over the counter painkillers.

If you think you need to have a tooth extracted, contact Dr Elizabeth Melvin Dentistry today to book a consultation.

A filling is needed when decay is present in the tooth, causing cavities to appear. If a cavity is left untreated it welcomes bacteria, which in turn leads to disease and infection and can eventually cause tooth loss. At Dr Elizabeth Melvin Dentistry, your oral health is our primary concern, which is why we provide both amalgam and white fillings to combat tooth decay.

Each filling we place meets the highest possible standards and we only use the most modern materials.

Amalgam (metal) fillings

Traditional metal fillings are made from dental amalgam and have been used to treat cavities for more than 150 years. The procedure for filling a cavity with amalgam is straightforward and quick, and the durable material is designed to last for a very long time. We often use this type of filling on the back teeth and in areas that are less visible when you smile.

Metal amalgam fillings take several hours to set fully, so we advise you to avoid eating on that side of the mouth for the rest of the day following treatment.

White fillings

As well as amalgam fillings, here at Dr Elizabeth Melvin Dentistry we also provide white fillings made from dental composite.

Dental composite is a tooth-coloured resin filled with glass (silicon dioxide) and is beneficial for patients looking to maintain a natural aesthetic. Although they take longer to place than amalgam fillings, white fillings are suitable for both back and front teeth and are invisible to others when you smile.

As well as the aesthetic appeal of a white filling, another major advantage is that they are set as soon as they’re placed, so you can eat on that side of the mouth as soon as you feel hungry! As long as your oral hygiene routine is in good shape, a white filling will last for a number of years.

A mouthguard is a custom made, rubber-like cover that fits exactly over your teeth and gums, cushioning them and protecting them from damage.

It is important to wear a professionally made mouthguard whenever you play sport that involves physical contact or moving objects, such as:

  • Cricket
  • Hockey
  • Football
  • Boxing
  • Rugby

All of these sports can cause injury to your mouth if you are not protected and a mouthguard will help prevent damage to the teeth and jaws.

Another reason to wear a mouthguard is if you grind your teeth. In this instance, you may need to wear a mouthguard at night. The mouthguard creates a physical barrier between your upper and lower teeth to protect them from further damage.

Bespoke Mouthguards

After your consultation, an impression of your mouth will be taken and a bespoke mouthguard constructed by the laboratory. This creates the best-fit mouth protector.

If you require any further details about having a bespoke mouth guard please contact our practice. We will be more than happy to help you.

Stained and discoloured teeth are not an uncommon phenomenon in the world we live in, in fact they have come to be a part of natural life. Our smiles fade as we get older, not to mention all the highly coloured foods and drinks we consume on a regular basis. But with professional teeth whitening treatment at Dr Elizabeth Melvin Dentistry, you can regain a brilliant, bright white smile.

At Dr Elizabeth Melvin Dentistry we work hard to provide the very latest dental treatment and use state of the art technology to make your treatment diagnosis as accurate as can be. OPG x-rays are special x-rays carried out on the teeth, jaws and lower face. An OPG reveals a panoramic view of the teeth, mouth and upper and lower jawbones.

What is an OPG?

An OPG provides a wide x-ray view of the lower face, so we can have a panoramic focus on the teeth on your upper and lower jaw on just one single image. It displays the position, growth and number of all your teeth, including those yet to erupt or surface. An OPG may also show us any problems with the jawbone or the TMJ (the joint that connects your jawbone to your head). We might suggest an OPG for you if we’re assessing your wisdom teeth, helping you decide on an orthodontic solution or just for a general overview of your teeth and the bone supporting them.

The OPG procedure

Before the procedure begins, we may ask you to remove glasses, jewellery and any metal objects that could obscure the images. We will ask you to stand with your face resting on a small shelf, and to gently bite on a sterile mouth piece to keep your head steady as it is important to stay as still as possible while the OPG is being taken. The procedure is quick and you will not feel any discomfort at all.

For more information about OPG x-rays and to find out if you could benefit from one, call our practice now to arrange a consultation.

Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected through tooth decay or damaged by an injury to your mouth. This infection may spread through the root canal system, which could eventually lead to an abscess, causing a great deal of discomfort. If root canal treatment is not carried out, the tooth may need to be taken out.

Our dentists can perform root canal treatment to stop the infection from spreading and will preserve as much of your tooth as possible. Using specific techniques and advanced equipment, you will receive a local anaesthetic and the treatment overall should feel no different to having an ordinary filling placed. The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure and most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits.

To keep your mouth in tip top shape we recommend you come in for regular hygiene appointments and dental check-ups.
